^Rules Swiss wine Grand Prix 2008

Art. 1 Purpose

The Grand Prix du Vin Suisse (GPVS) will provide a current view of the quality of Swiss wines.

The competition is open to all Swiss wine producers. The wines will be divided into different categories and will be tasted at official, blind tastings. The purpose of the Grand Prix is to promote the quality of Swiss wine within the larger context of the standards of international wine competitions (set by the OIV and the UIOE) and to support the efforts of Swiss growers and wine producers in a demanding modern wine market, nationally and internationally.

The competition is carried out under the patronage of the Union Suisse des OEnologues (USOE).

Art. 2 RESPONSIBILITIES AND STRUCTURES

2.1 General
The Grand Prix is a joint venture between VINEA, Sierre and the European wine review Vinum, based in Zurich.

VINEA is responsible for organizing the tastings. It provides the necessary resources, including the availability of its infrastructure and staff , to ensure that the competition is carried out in accordance with standards sets by the Organisation Internationale de la Vigne et du Vin (OIV).

2.2 Technical commission
A GPVS commission of two constitutes the supervising body. It oversees the selection of wines for the Nuit du Vin Suisse gala and sets directives for all the events related to it. The commissioners are responsible for preparations for the tasting, the event itself and for verifying the results.

Art. 3 ELIGIBILITY AND WINE SELECTION

3.1 General
All wines that are produced in Switzerland, which are 100% from grapes harvested in Switzerland, are eligible for the Grand Prix.


3.2 Regulations covering the wines
The wines must be delivered in their original state. Labels must carry all legally required information.

3.3 Production and wine stock
Grand Prix participation requires a minimum production of 1,500 units (bottles or half-bottles), of which 500 must still be available at the time of the Gala, the official awards ceremony which takes place in early November. The producers of the first six wines that are nominated in each category must make 24 bottles available to the organization for the awards ceremony event.

2. Wines with residual sugar: from 8 gr / l

3. Dry red wines (still)
3.1 Pinot noir
3.2 Gamay
3.3 Merlot
3.4 Other single-grape red wines
3.5 Blended wines
4. Rosé wines

Art. 5 DATE AND PLACE FOR THE 2008 COMPETITION

The tastings for the Grand Prix du Vin Suisse will take place from 24-27 June 2008 in Sierre.

Art. 6 REGISTRATION

6.1 Process
Participants must fill out a separate registration form for each wine. Once registered, each wine is given an identification number which it keeps until the end of the GPVS competition.

6.2 Registration form
The registration form for each wine must indicate:
• Contact information for the producer
• Domain or origin of the wine
• Grape variety (ies)
• The vintage
• Wine category (see article 4)
• Alcohol content
• Residual sugar (obligatory): an incorrect listing of the sugar content will result in an automatic disqualification of the wine sample. The order in which the samples are tasted is determined by the progressive weight of the sugars, to ensure all producers are treated fairly.
• The number of bottles produced
• The lot number (according to the OEDAl, art. 19-21)
• The public selling price (cellar price including VAT/sales tax)
• The signature of the participant, confirming that the wine has been produced in conformity with the law.

6.3 Number of samples per registered wine
For each wine registered, three bottles (or the equivalent of 2.25 litres, for example, six bottles of 37.5 cl) must be made available to the organization and the bottles must arrive before 6 June 2008 at:

6.4 Cost
Registration, 7.6% VAT included (number 398 838), is CHF 130 for each wine registered, with second and additional wine registration fees reduced to CHF 110:
First wine CHF 130.–

Registration fees must be paid before 6 June 2008: To bank account 17-675671-3 or by credit card but only for secure online registrations using Visa, Mastercard and Postcard.

Art. 7 JUDGING

The wines will be grouped by wine category (art. 4), year and sugar weight. The order of the wines within a category will be made randomly by computer.
Each wine will be tasted by a commission of five members which will have a table secretary.
The points system is based on a shared IOIV and UIOE system which is used for international wine competitions. The judges’ sheet has a 100-point scale.
The judges are selected by the Grand Prix VINEA/Vinum Commission and can be replaced only by this group.

Art. 8 PUBLICATION AND COMMUNICATION OF THE RESULTS

8.1 Programme’s start
The GPVS was announced by Vinum in its May 2008 issue.

8.2 Awards and publication of winners
1) Certificates
The following certificates are awarded:
Gold
Silver

In line with OIV and UIOE rules the total number of certificates given must not be more than 30% of the total wines registered for the competition.
The results will be communicated by post to each producer. Sticky labels for gold and silver winners are available for purchase and these will be sent by post. A certificate will be given to each producer whose wines receive awards.
A chapter in the Swiss Wine Guide 2009/2010 will list all gold and silver winners, by region and by wine category. The winners will also be listed online, on the GPVS site at www.grandprixduvinsuisse.ch and the information distributed as widely as possible.

2) Prizes
The producers whose wines have earned the highest number of points in each category will be invited to the Nuit du Vin Suisse gala 7 November 2008.
The six top wines in each category are nominated for awards and the three top wines are named winners. The wine producers will receive a custom-made artistic trophy in recognition of their success.
The winning wines will be included in a special chapter in the Swiss Wine Guide 2009/2010 and in the December 2008 issue of the wine magazine Vinum.

3) Special awards
• Swiss bio prize: to the bio wine with the highest number of points
• Best winema ker of the year prize: the producer who has the largest number of wines among the 66 nominated to be winners, as well as one wine which wins in its category.
• Viniss imo prize: given to the wine which obtains the highest number of points of any wine entered in the competition.

The three winners will be included in a special chapter in the Swiss Wine Guide 2009/2010 and in the December 2008 issue of the wine magazine Vinum.

4) Awarding of the prizes
The Nuit du Vin Suisse will be held 7 November 2008 in Zurich and it will be open to the public as well as the press, to ensure good media coverage. The producers of nominated wines will be invited to the awards ceremony individually. The winners of all categories will be announced, and the prizes awarded, at the gala evening.

The results of the competition and the list of prize-winning wines will be published in the December 2008 issue of Vinum magazine.

8.3 Results
The results and awards obtained at the GPVS will be communicated directly to each participant.

Art. 9 CONTESTED DECISIONS

The judges’ decisions are final. No decisions may be contested.

Art. 10 ACCEPTANCE OF THE RULES

The participant accepts these rules.
